A section of KRA staff members have regularly been on the spot for altering tax returns and fraudulently clearing cargo to help people evade duty payments
KRA Commissioner General Githii Mburu recently announced that wearable cameras will be used by KRA staff in the domestic tax and customs & border control departments.
KRA staff will start wearing body cams in a bid to curb kickbacks and tax fraud. In an interview with the Business Daily, Mr. Mburu said, “Very soon we will also be ensuring our enforcement officers have body-worn cameras in the U.S, so that any action they take is recorded and we can see it. When you put it off, we will also have to understand why you do it.”
He also stated clearly that the wearable body cameras will ensure that the enforcement officers do nothing to interfere with KRA’s objectives. “We have to employ risk management where our risks are highest, so they will be more for our officers at body points where things are moving in and out of all our custom areas.” He added.
Some of the areas the cameras will be rolled out are JKIA, Mombasa Port, and the Inland Container Depot. Mr. Mburu noted that these three areas have witnessed cases of bribery, corruption, and false declaration returns.
Since KRA claims to lose approximately Ksh. 12billion, do you think these body cams will help?
